Verbrand Fort

1703

Back to overview

Once upon a time, the Verbrand Fort was an advanced position for defending Bruges and Damme against attacks from the United Provinces. The fortification was added by French troops in around 1703-1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession. This was a classic square redoubt with a moat around the site. The Verbrand Fort was one of a series of smaller fortifications, which served as a military post to protect the larger Fort van Beieren. The fort no longer has a military role, but today it has an ecologically important function. Many water and meadow birds live here and there is some interesting vegetation in the remains of the moat. Thanks to a little restoration, in 2012 the Verbrand Fort was revealed once again and can now be visited on its site along the Schipdonkvaart near Damme. There is also a bridle path around the fort.
