Fort Francipani (Moerbeke)

1644

Back to overview

Like Fort Moerspui, this fort belongs to the Line of the Nieuwe Vaart and was constructed in 1644. After Hulst was taken by the States troops in November 1645, whereby most of the Spanish forts were captured, Francipani remained in Spanish hands. The Peace of Munster confirmed this situation. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the fort would be modified by the French military engineer Vauban. This was a fairly large fort with four bastions surrounded by a moat and glacis with covered road with sides of over 350 metres. Fort Francipani has remained well preserved. The defence embankment and main canal are almost intact on the western side. The eastern half is still recognisable in the parcelling and slight elevations. The glacis is also nearly intact. On the central square, there are recent buildings. However, this is all private property and not open to the public.
